Gaby Basora REALLY Likes Riding her Bicycle – nymag

According to this recent interview in NYMag, Gaby Basora really does like her bicycle!

Below are snippets from that interview. I found them so worth sharing with you…

"…I like to find obscure little vintage stores and antique shops. I do a lot of exploring — I ride my bike pretty much everywhere and pop into random stores."

"… I ride my bike a lot, and I end up in pants more often than I wish — the long skirts tend to get caught in my wheel."

What's something you never leave the house without? --- "My bicycle — I pretty much ride year-round. I lived in Amsterdam when I was younger, and you develop this complete resiliency to ride straight into the wind."

Now I'm off to find a photo of Gaby and her bicycle. Hmmh, I wonder what she rides?

p.s. Gaby will be the next quest designer for Target. ---And will Gaby ever consider getting a skirt guard put on her bicycle!?

Sage and her Bicycle Trip- Part II

Sage’s first destination via bicycle was...

( a little close up detail of her DIY bicycle handlebar bag...)

just outside of Salem OR - it was to attend a Primitive Skills Workshop - she was there a week. I didn't think to ask Sage just what a Primitive Skills Workshop might entail, though I had an idea. How brilliant I thought. That could certainly come in handy for a bike road trip.

From the photos (and the previous video) you can see how Sage outfitted her bike. I didn't go into detail asking about what she packed. Maybe some day Sage will write or blog about her stories. To that end she did say she kept a journal.

In her journal she said she periodically chronicled stuff- mundane stuff like directions, maps plus jotted down miscellaneous notes - and then her more personal musings and drawings too.

Some people she met along the way she said, would ask incredulously if she were traveling solo - even accused her of being too young and openly wondered if she were a runaway. All and all most people were encouraging though and she smiled.

I asked about her plans while she is in Santa Cruz. She said she loves bicycles and would love to work as a bike mechanic. It's a skill she's honed in on I imagine. Very useful for a long solo bike trip of 1000 miles.

Corinne Day 1965 - August 28, 2010

Corinne Day was arguably one of the most influential photographers of the 90s.

Working with a young Kate Moss on a fashion story for The Face magazine titled 'The 3rd Summer of Love,' which was published in July 1990 and later (1993) on the British Vogue cover story (opposite) the images would define the 'Waif' look and spark the 'Heroin chic' movement.

The imperfect and voyeuristic feel of the images that Corinne Day produced were in stark contrast to the perfectly made up supermodels and photography of the time, paving the way for the documentary style photography that became synonymous with the late nineties and beyond.

Sage's Bike Trip...Bellingham to Santa Cruz

A few days ago I met Sage.

We talked a bit about her experiences on the road. There is more to her story. I will be writing soon and posting a continuation of Sage's story along with a few more photos.

I also have her phone number - so if there are any questions for Sage let me know. This could become an interactive interview depending on what you want to ask Sage. I for one think she should start a blog and share her travel journal...

As for how this movie came to exist - Well, I got the idea to use my iphone 4G/imovie app and record a tiny bit of our conversation. I'd never used my iphone this way before, never made a video before in my life for that matter! Thankfully I did figure it out. ALL of it, 100% was done on my iphone including uploading it to YouTube.

*See here, here and here for more stories of of ladies traveling the road via bicycle

p.s. Yes, there is a surprising reference to Eat, Pray and Love in Sage's video.

Riding Your Bicycle To the Sea

Riding your bicycle to the sea - can anything seem more lovely?

Bicycle by the Sea shared by ridingpretty

When I think of all the plethora of images of girls and their bicycles, I smile. I have featured a good many such romanticized images here on RidingPretty, as you may well have discerned by now. Yes, I really like the beautifully romantic ones like this one I am sharing with you today. I get so very much inspired!

It wasn’t always so easy to find the romantic photo of a girl and her bicycle, say for instance a photo showing her on a picnic outing or riding on a country road. What I’ve discovered - starting with the fashion, then the lifestyle commercial photographers, is that this niche genre of photo started popping up a little, then more and then way more! When there is a good thing - it gets widely emulated, and well it should! Photographers are staging shoots with girls and their bicycles in the country side, on picnics (lots of picnic baskets spread out on picnic blankets). Lots of beautifully captured moments – happily frolicking moments, looking reflective moments, sharing looks between girlfriends moments. Oh, and girls with balloons on their bicycles, lots of balloons on bicycle. Romanticized bicycle images are showing up everywhere!

Seems like everyone’s got a good idea for a girl and her bicycle shot! Tumblr is the “goto” for tons of photos of girls with bicycles. Just about every image every published on the web ends up on somebody’s Tumblr page. Added into the mix now are all of the beautiful self captured moments of (all the newer/newish) bicycle bloggers doing their own photo shares. All their (maybe even your) romantically themed photos eventually end up on these Tumblr pages... I am politely guessing?

It’s all fun. If I weren’t so lazy this summer I’d have been off capturing more shots of my own idealized, perfect bicycle picnic outing. Hey, that’s not such a bad idea.

Hanging With Glenn @ Griffou...NYC

8/22

I caught up with my fab friend Glenn Belverio Thursday night and saw this girl. Really liked her big bow and draped off-the-shoulder jacket. (Had a kind of Madonna vibe, circa 1986—love!).

Took this picture of Glenn as we were leaving. Look at his shoulders. Looks like he has wings.

Glenn in front of Hotel Griffou. The lighting over his head was casting a red-ish, orange-ish tint on him (he said it reminded him of Snooki from the Jersey Shore). His tan is actually very bronzed, golden (and real).

Rock Steady Crew 33rd Anniversary - Free Outdoor Concert & Food Drive

Day 2 of the RSC Anniversary: The highly anticipated free outdoor concert at Lincoln Park in Newark, NJ. This year's lineup included Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, Black Sheep, Kurtis Blow, Noreaga...and so many more. One of the highlights for me, though, was watching Rock Steady Crew's new generation of members shine. They maybe be young and still paying dues, but they proved they can definitely hold their own with the pioneers.
(Clear professional-looking photos by Joe Conzo.)

Big Daddy Kane

Rock Steady Crew weren't the only ones with the moves. Big Daddy Kane and his boys give them a run for their money during Kane's performance.

On the other side of the stage, Crazy Legs holds back lil' Bailrok from battling the big boys.

It's On:  Bailrok declares battle. (It's about to get busy.)

Crazy Legs, stepping in.

Mari Koda, dishing it out.

Old-School and New-School: Kane gives Bailrok and the crew props

EPMD

It takes a lot to make the Anniversary happen each year. Here, Crazy Legs giving a very special "thank you" to the three RSC rockstars, Alex Aquino, Leah Maxwell and Sebastian Serrano, who help make all the magic happen.

And later, backstage...Joe Conzo getting interviewed.

Lunch Breaks in the House: D-stroy and Crazy Legs. If you haven't seen the Lunch Breaks show you're missing out on some serious laughs, super cool music and a potpourri of foods prepared by some of hip-hops greatest pioneers. It airs every day from 1:45 - 4:00 pm (EST) at crazylegsworkshop.com. Be sure to tune in.

Me with RSC's Bailrok and Jeromeskee.

 With DJ Evil Dee

Security at the event is of the utmost importance, which is why Crazy Legs and producers only bring in the big dogs.

Stage manager Leah Maxwell manning the all-important artist schedule. As each artist arrived throughout the day, Leah had them sign the schedule, right next to their name. Her own personal RSC 33rd Anniversary keepsake.

Caught in the Act: Crazy Legs explaining to Fever One (right, with Sharpie still in hand) that he had just tagged his name on an area of the schedule that was reserved for one of the artists. ATS (in the middle) observes Fever's fine work.

RSC's DJ DV One, Bailrok and Feenx hanging out (and enjoying a healthy fruit salad).

What would the Anniversary be without a killer performance by Rock Steady Crew? Here, b-boy Case One.

Noreaga stopped by for a surprise performance.

Kurtis Blow, about to take the stage.

These Are The Breaks: Kurtis Blow showed off his breaks during the performance.

B-girl Feenix broke out hers, too.

And the man who helped pioneer breakin', Crazy Legs.

Kurtis and the crew take a bow. A great day...and "goodnight."

ATS, Rock Steady for Life. Until next year...
